Using WebP in a website image workflow

Convert a copy

Keep the source as a master and use WebP as a delivery format. This lets you change the export settings later without recompressing an already lossy result.

Measure the result

Compare bytes and appearance together. A smaller file is useful only if it still communicates the important detail and is accepted by the destination.

Check support at the destination

Modern browsers commonly display WebP, but some older publishing tools and upload forms still restrict formats. Use the format the destination actually accepts rather than assuming a conversion solves every compatibility issue.

Try the workflow

Try a photograph at quality 80, then compare fine details. The best setting depends on the image, and some sources will already be efficiently encoded.
